Hi Friend!
It is officially fall! I’ll admit that sometimes welcoming fall into our homes feels a bit premature as the summer temps try to hold on a little bit longer, but before we know it, that crisp autumn air has me turning my attention back indoors, and the itch to make our home feel warm and cozy strikes again. As we prepare to welcome fall into our homes, here are a few things I like to do as we transition into the new season.
Once the cooler temps start to hit, I can’t wait to begin transitioning the inside of our home. I bring out warmer blankets, and change up our throw pillow covers with ones that speak fall to me. Seashells that were displayed for summer get replaced with pinecones, and the white sand I filled my hurricane vases with is replaced with mini pinecones or acorns, signifying that fall has arrived.
Of course all of this is being done while listening to Autumn Leaves by Nat King Cole on repeat and a pumpkin spice coffee in hand.
I walk around removing any faux stems that resemble summer, and replace them with a few of my favorites I’ve collected over the past could of years. While nothing beats walking out into our backyard and clipping a few branches, I like to have a few staple faux fall stems that I can count on to last all season long.
The ones I used in the photo below are a mix of stems I found last year from Target and online at Magnolia.
I like to take my time welcoming fall in and around our home. Over the past ten years of sharing how I decorate our home online I’ve found that I enjoy it more if I take my time and savor each subtle change. One day I focus on swapping out my fall stems, another creating a welcoming front door by hanging a fall wreath and creating some fall planters. I bring out warmer blankets, and change up our throw pillow covers with ones that speak fall to me. I refuse to let the hurry of the world tell me I have to do it all, or have it done yesterday. Some years I go all out, adding more pumpkins than I can count around our house. And some years it’s just a few simple touches, and one single statement pumpkin that feels enough. Do what feels right for you.
“If I can encourage you with one thing, it would be this: Don’t let what other people are doing or the trends on the internet dictate how much or how little you decorate your home.” Welcoming fall into our home is so much more than just making sure we have the perfect decor. It’s about creating a home that we love and a cozy atmosphere that invites us in, telling us we belong. I promise you, you will enjoy this season (and every season) so much more.
Do you have a favorite fall scent? Or perhaps a favorite fall drink? What speaks fall to you? As we begin to embrace the new season ahead look for ways that you can intentionally invite fall in and celebrate all the it beholds.
