The Scenic Hotel Group has once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence, sustainability, and innovation with a series of remarkable achievements in 2024. From being recognised at the prestigious HM Awards to embarking on ambitious growth initiatives in the Pacific Islands, the group is setting the standard for responsible and exceptional hospitality across New Zealand and beyond.

Triumph at the 2024 HM Awards

Scenic Hotel Group took home the Environmental Program Award at the 2024 HM Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence. This accolade acknowledges the group’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship across its properties in New Zealand and the Pacific.

Richard Hayman, Head of Property and Environmental Policy Advisor, accepted the award, reflecting on the group’s ongoing efforts to preserve the region’s natural beauty. From energy-efficient operations to eco-friendly guest initiatives, Scenic Hotel Group says it is leading the charge for sustainability in the hospitality sector.

The awards ceremony also celebrated individual excellence within the group. Rebecca Mangan, Management Accountant, and Kathryn Jenkins, People and Culture Manager, received Highly Commended honours in the Finance Associate and Human Resources Associate categories, respectively. Meanwhile, Raj Karekar, Hotel Manager at Scenic Hotel Punakaiki, was shortlisted for the Rising Star Award, recognising his leadership potential and dedication to the industry.

CEO Karl Luxon expressed immense pride in these achievements, stating, “These accolades highlight our team’s commitment to sustainability and excellence, inspiring us to continue raising the bar for hospitality in New Zealand and the Pacific.”

Expanding Horizons: A Focus on the Pacific Islands

Building on its 44-year legacy, Scenic Hotel Group is turning its attention to the Pacific Islands, with plans to expand its footprint and share its expertise with regional properties. To lead this initiative, Brett Inkster has been appointed Property Development Manager – Pacific Islands.

Brett brings 25 years of experience within group, where he has overseen major projects such as the launch of Scenic Dunedin City Hotel and significant refurbishments at Scenic Hotel Marlborough and Scenic Suites Queenstown. His standout achievements include rebranding and elevating Scenic Matavai Resort Niue, transforming it into a premier destination through strategic collaborations and operational excellence.

As part of his new role, Brett will meet with property owners and operators in Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, and Vanuatu to explore partnerships that leverage Scenic Hotel Group’s proven business systems and support functions.

“Our goal is to help properties tell their unique stories and elevate their offerings,” says Luxon. “Through tailored solutions, we aim to create a win-win for property owners and their guests.”

Upgrades at Scenic Matavai Resort Niue

Scenic Matavai Resort Niue is set for a significant transformation as part of the Group’s commitment to continuous improvement. Newly appointed General Manager, James Shilton, brings a wealth of hospitality experience to the role. He will oversee a comprehensive refurbishment project designed to elevate the resort to a 4.5-star standard.

Melissa Alexander, General Manager of Hotel Operations, shares the vision: “The refurbishment includes enhanced décor and modern amenities for our Superior rooms, and a complete redesign of public areas, including the bar, reception, and restaurant. These updates will create a contemporary and welcoming atmosphere for our guests.

“The refurbishment, scheduled between January and March 2025, will be carefully managed to minimize disruption. With staggered upgrades and limited working hours, the team aims to ensure a seamless experience for guests during this exciting transformation.”

A Commitment to Excellence

Scenic Hotel Group remains New Zealand’s largest locally owned hotel network, with a reputation built on strong customer relationships, innovative strategies, and sustainable practices. From winning awards to driving regional growth, the Group continues to set benchmarks for the industry.

“As 2024 draws to a close, we look ahead with optimism, inspired by our achievements and energised by new opportunities to bring world-class hospitality to New Zealand and the Pacific,” concluded Alexander.
