Summer for us means spending most of our time outdoors, but that doesn’t stop me from making a few simple seasonal changes to the decor around our home. Summer brings to mind the feeling of keeping things light and breezy. Laid back days, windows open (when there is no humidity), and that warm summer breeze blowing through. I put together this simple summer vignette showcasing some of my favorite things about summer.

The buffet in our dining room is the perfect landing spot to swap out my decor seasonally. Sometimes I only swap out a few of the smaller pieces, like floral stems and knick knacks. But occasionally I like to lear off the entire surface and start over. This lets me shop my house and play “musical chairs” with my decor while creating a completely different look. That is just what I did for this summer vignette.
Since I wanted to keep things simple, I placed a large mirror I was using in another room, and placed it on the center of my buffet to act as the focal point. The focal point in a vignette is usually a larger scale piece (like a mirror, or artwork), used in the center to ground the smaller items placed on either side.
One the right hand side I stacked some large coffee table books (in neutral colors), and placed a hurricane glass candle holder on top. Stacking items adds height and also creates layers which gives your vignette depth. Next to it, a white stoneware vase holding tiny pieces of driftwood I’ve collected over the years, and a smaller marble pedestal holding an air plant.
Note: Each of the vessels I used has a different texture. Shiny glass. Smooth marble. Aged stoneware. When using similar pieces look for ones in different finishes to add variety.
To the left I filled an antique maple syrup bucket with faux white snowball hydrangeas. I purchased these from Afloral a few years ago on sale (they are a bit of an investment!), but proof that if you buy something you love you will use it again and again in your decorating.
To add height I staggered two wooden candle holders with white pillar candles on them and placed them in a slight diagonal as to create an imaginary triangle between the galvanized bucket and the two candle holders.
Getting the right placement of your accessories can sometimes feel tricky, but don’t feel defeated. I shift things around slightly looking for just the right placement to give me that layered look I’m after. So don’t be afraid to make tiny adjustments until it feels right to you.
If your pieces feel too disconnected, try pushing them closer together. If it feels too congested slide them a little further apart. If something doesn’t feel right, try swapping our different pieces to get the right height and variation that you need. Remember you are just “trying” out accessories until the right look emerges.
