Meet Newmarket’s clever McChickle & Bacon Top Toastie for 2025!

Newmarket based Toast on the Green’s McChickle & Bacon is the supreme winner of The Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover 2025.

The eatery is a first-time entrant in the highly sought after competition. Its award-winning entry is ‘The McChickle & Bacon, a toastie oozing with shredded chicken, crispy bacon, burger sauce, American cheddar, McClure’s Bread & Butter Pickles and pickle pesto.’

“Wow, pow, wham! Toast on the Green has produced a toastie that delivers a knockout punch of flavour and deliciousness,” says head judge, Kerry Tyack.

“There is a lot going on here but the creators have nailed it. The not-too-sweet burger sauce, the right cheese and of course the lashings of McClures pickles is a polyamorous marriage of fun flavours. Multiple tastings of this toastie proved its consistency and there’s a load of generosity in this toastie as well. It’s an easy eat and great on the wallet.”

The supreme winner will be on the menu at Toast on the Green for the next month. Aucklanders and visitors to the city will be able to order it from 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday.

“This is the eighth year of the Toastie Takeover and the first time an Auckland eatery has won,” says competition co-founder Nick Brown. “With 208 entries participating, it was the biggest Toastie Takeover ever and we have been blown away with the inventiveness, incredible flavour combos and the love that cooks and chefs have poured into their toasties.”
