The calm, dark waters reflect the trees above, and the quiet setting makes it easy to soak in the sights and sounds of the swamp. Carolina Outdoor Adventures and Palmetto Outdoor both offer kayak and canoe rentals, making it easy to plan a paddling trip through Congaree.
Wildlife Watching

One of the most unique experiences at Congaree happens in mid-May, when the forest lights up with synchronized fireflies. This rare natural phenomenon only occurs in a few places across North America. It’s become so popular that the park now uses a lottery system and charges a small fee to help protect the habitat and manage crowds. Congaree National Park has also been named one of America’s most pet friendly national parks. The boardwalks and trails and campgrounds on Congaree are a great spot for pets. The comfortable 2.6 mile Boardwalk Loop Trail is the park’s easy trail and is a great place to walk your pet.

If you’re hoping to turn your visit into a weekend getaway, tent camping is the way to go. The park offers two options: front country camping at Longleaf Campground and backcountry camping at Bluff Campground. There are no restaurants inside the park, so pack a cooler and plan to cook at your site. Don’t forget marshmallows for a classic s’mores night under the stars.
